Administrative Perinatal Center

Overview of the Loyola Administrative Perinatal Center

The Loyola Administrative Perinatal Center (APC) is designated by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) as a liaison and resource to provide quality maternal-fetal and neonatal care, with an aim to improve outcomes for pregnant women and their babies. The APC provides outreach education and collaborates in quality improvement, specific to the needs of its network hospitals.

Loyola Medical Center (LUMC) is a university-affiliated hospital and receives referrals from network hospitals and from a wide variety of physician practices. LUMC is a Level III perinatal center with a proven record of accomplishments in providing excellent care to high-risk mothers while improving outcomes for infants born with congenital conditions or newborns requiring advanced medical and/or surgical care.

Services include:

  • Administration and implementation of IDPH Perinatal Health Care Programs
  • Educational opportunities for nurses, physicians, and perinatal health care professionals
  • A team of professionals that assist in reviewing complex maternal and neonatal cases for the purpose of quality improvement and education
  • A center of communication between IDPH and the network hospitals
  • 24/7 transport services for high-risk maternal and infant care
  • Individualized inpatient and outpatient consultation services
  • Neonatal high risk follow-up clinic

Level III Women’s Health and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

A Level III provides comprehensive care for women experiencing complicated, high-risk pregnancies, as well as specialized care for critically ill and premature newborns, with resources for advanced respiratory support, specialized feeding, and other complex medical interventions. Level IIIs function as a resource to network hospitals and accepts transfers of maternal and neonatal patients from in- and out-of-network physician referrals.

Level IIE: Extended Neonatal Capabilities

Level IIE hospitals provide care to women and newborns at moderate risk and may care for maternal patients with selected obstetric complications that present after 32 weeks gestation. They operate an intermediate care nursery, but not an NICU, and offer care for infants born at 30 or more weeks gestation and with a birth weight of 1250 grams or greater.

Level II: Intermediate Maternity and Newborn Hospitals

A level II nursery is capable of caring for premature infants at 32 or more week's gestation and/or those with a birthweight greater than 1500 grams who are otherwise well. These hospitals offer specialized newborn care, including feeding support and respiratory assistance, but are not equipped for the highest level of critical care.

These hospitals are part of perinatal networks and work with higher-level birthing facilities to provide comprehensive care for pregnant women and newborns and often serve as transfer locations for women and infants needing specialized care. The Loyola APC has three Level 0 hospitals in its network:

  • Community First Medical Center
  • Loretto Hospital
  • Gottlieb Memorial Hospital
