Helping prevent fractures before they happen

Own the Bone is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program developed by the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) to improve bone health and reduce the risk of fragility fractures. These fractures often occur with minimal trauma, such as a fall from standing height, and are commonly linked to osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones over time.

Why bone health matters

Fragility fractures are a major health concern, especially among older adults. These fractures often lead to decreased mobility and quality of life. Addressing bone health early can help prevent future injuries and maintain independence.

How Own the Bone® helps bone health

This evidence-based quality improvement program provides a structured approach to fragility fracture prevention and long-term bone health. The primary components of the program include:

  • Risk assessment: Identifying patients who have experienced a fragility fracture or are at high risk for one.
  • Diagnostic testing: This may include bone mineral density (DXA) scans and lab work to evaluate bone strength and underlying causes.
  • Lifestyle and nutrition counseling: Offering guidance on calcium and vitamin D intake, exercise and fall prevention strategies.
  • Medication management: Reviewing and prescribing osteoporosis medications when appropriate.
  • Care coordination: Ensuring communication between orthopaedic specialists, primary care providers and other clinicians for comprehensive follow-up.
  • Patient education: Providing resources to help patients understand their condition and take an active role in their bone health.
