MAYWOOD, IL – Loyola Medicine proudly announces that William Small, Jr., MD, FACRO, FACR, FASCO, FASTRO, director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center and vice president of Oncology for Trinity Health’s Illinois/Indiana Region, which includes Loyola Medicine and Saint Joseph Health System, has been named president of the American Radium Society, the nation’s oldest multidisciplinary cancer society devoted to the study and treatment of cancer.
Founded in 1916, the American Radium Society brings together leaders in radiation oncology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology and medical oncology to advance cancer care through collaboration, education and research. Dr. Small’s appointment reflects his national and international leadership in oncology and his longstanding commitment to improving outcomes for patients with cancer.

In additional recognition of his contributions to the field, Dr. Small was named a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO) at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Association for Clinical Oncology. The FASCO designation honors members for extraordinary volunteer service, professional engagement and dedication to ASCO. Once conferred, Fellow status is a lifetime designation.
Dr. Small’s leadership extends beyond the United States. In March, he served as a keynote speaker at the Australia and New Zealand Gynecologic Oncology Group Annual Scientific Meeting, where he presented Optimizing Oncology: The Intersection of Oncology, Academic Trials & International Collaboration. The international conference convened leading experts to share knowledge, strengthen collaboration and advance innovation in gynecologic cancer care.
