MAYWOOD, IL – Marilyn Glassberg Csete, MD, an internationally recognized expert in interstitial and rare lung diseases, has been awarded the 2025 United Therapeutics Jenesis Trailblazer Award for her groundbreaking research in lung fibrosis.
The award "recognizes one exceptional U.S. or Canada-based female researcher or clinician who has completed innovative research in the fields of pulmonary hypertension, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, or lung transplantation."
As chair of the Loyola Medicine Department of Medicine and John W. Clarke Chair and Professor, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Dr. Glassberg Csete has dedicated her career to advancing the understanding and treatment of complex lung disorders. Her pioneering work has transformed the approach to diagnosing and managing interstitial lung diseases, particularly those with limited treatment options.
For more than 25 years, she has conducted National Institute of Health (NIH) industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trials in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Throughout her career, her research has focused on the pivotal role of inflammation in the onset and progression of chronic ILD and the effects of mesenchymal stem cells (exosomes), sex hormones, and aging in the lung. She is well recognized for her development of key educational and interactive programs for women in pulmonary medicine nationally and internationally, having led these efforts through the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS).
Glassberg adds this award to her long list of accomplishments. For her leadership in pulmonary and critical care medicine, she was the recipient of the American College of CHEST Physicians' 2023 Murray Kornfeld Memorial Founders Award. She was awarded the National Library of Medicine Award in 2003.
"We are so proud of Dr. Glassberg and grateful she is being recognized for her excellence in her field," said Shawn P. Vincent, President and Chief Executive Officer of Loyola Medicine. "Dr. Glassberg exemplifies Loyola’s commitment to research and innovative treatments crucial for advancing medical knowledge and improving patient outcomes."
