Residency Experience & Rotations

Continuity Clinic

The Loyola Med-Peds resident clinic is located on the main medical center campus. Med-Peds residents conduct both adult and pediatric visits in every clinic session under the supervision of dedicated continuity clinic attendings.

For those residents seeking a supplemental continuity clinic experience, the opportunity to provide care to uninsured, often undocumented, patients in the Loyola Access to Care clinic is an elective option.

Med-Peds and X+Y

In 2011, the Internal Medicine residency program transitioned to a block scheduling system called "4+1" in which 4-week blocks of inpatient or consult service were followed by a 1-week ambulatory experience referred to as the "+1" week. The new system required division of the resident body into 5 rotational groups called "Firms" and resulted in a unique opportunity for building camaraderie and professional development.

In 2024, the Pediatrics residency program made its transition to a "4+2" block system that allowed our Med-Peds program to fully embrace the X+Y philosophy.

Loyola Med-Peds residents alternate between the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics every 4 months. Rotational experiences are carefully tracked and yearly schedules are constructed by the Program Director and categorical Chief Residents in close collaboration with individual residents.
