Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program
Compassionate, Specialized Care for Survivors of Sexual Assault
At Loyola Medicine, we are committed to providing expert, trauma-informed care for survivors of sexual assault through our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program. Our team of highly trained nurses specialize in forensic examinations, medical care, and emotional support, ensuring that survivors receive the comprehensive assistance they need in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.
What is the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program?
The SANE Program is a specialized medical service designed to care for individuals who have experienced sexual assault, sexual violence, or intimate partner violence (IPV).
Through this program, survivors receive:
- Compassionate and confidential medical care
- A forensic exam (SANE exam) if desired
- Access to crisis intervention and advocacy services
- Support for reporting the incident to law enforcement (if the survivor chooses)
- Resources for follow-up medical and emotional care
SANE Nurses at Loyola Medicine
Our SANE nurses are registered nurses with advanced training in forensic nursing and sexual assault examinations. These professionals specialize in trauma-informed care, ensuring that every survivor is treated with dignity and respect throughout the process.
Each of our SANE nurses has received extensive education in:
- Medical care for survivors of sexual trauma
- Forensic evidence collection and documentation
- Understanding the cycle of violence and the effects of abuse
- Providing emotional support and crisis intervention
- Working with law enforcement and legal professionals (if the survivor chooses to report)
How SANE Nurses Can Help
SANE nurses provide expert medical attention to ensure the survivor’s physical well-being. They assess and treat injuries, offer preventive care for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and provide emergency contraception when needed. The goal is to prioritize the survivor’s immediate health while offering compassionate, trauma-informed care.
If a survivor chooses, a forensic examination can be performed to collect and document evidence. SANE nurses conduct these exams in a respectful, sensitive manner, ensuring that the survivor is in control of the process. The collected evidence can be used in legal proceedings, but participation in law enforcement investigations is entirely up to the survivor.
All information collected during the forensic examination is kept confidential, accessible only to those directly involved in the patient's care or if required by law. Primary care providers do not have automatic access to these records unless the survivor requests it.
Evidence is typically collected within 7 days following an assault, but our SANE nurses use their professional judgment in determining whether a forensic exam is still appropriate after that window. Even if more than 7 days have passed, survivors can still access supportive services, including STI testing and treatment, rape crisis advocacy, emotional support, help making a police report, and referrals for ongoing care.
All services directly related to the assault — such as the SANE exam, STI testing, and emergency contraception — are provided free of charge through a medical voucher. If a patient has primary insurance, it may be billed first, but any remaining costs are covered by the voucher so survivors are not financially burdened.
Experiencing sexual assault or intimate partner violence can have lasting emotional effects. SANE nurses provide crisis intervention, connect survivors with counseling services, and offer guidance on coping strategies. Survivors receive support in a judgment-free environment where their emotional well-being is a top priority.
Navigating the aftermath of sexual assault can be overwhelming. SANE nurses help survivors understand their legal rights and options. They provide information on reporting procedures, connect survivors with legal advocacy organizations, and offer support through any legal proceedings should the survivor choose to pursue them.
Loyola’s SANE program is committed to providing inclusive care for all survivors, including LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and non-English speakers. Interpreter services are available to ensure that every survivor receives care in the language they are most comfortable with.
