About
I currently serve as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, a position I assumed in 2003. I joined Loyola in 1990 where I served as Director of the Cornea Service and Residency Program Director until 2003 when I assumed responsibilities as Chair.
My clinical practice is focused on medical and surgical diseases of the cornea and ocular surface. My research focus has overlapped with my clinical practice where I have developed a focus on severe ocular surface disease including acute and chronic Steven’s Johnson Syndrome (SJS), graft vs host disease (GVHD), and dry eye disease (DED). I have published 62 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 110 abstracts and 20 book chapters. I have been invited to speak at over 80 regional national and international meetings and have given at least 60 other presentations at various academic forums. I have organized multiple Symposia and special interest group meetings focused on Steven’s Johnson Syndrome and Sleep Apnea. I enjoy mentoring junior faculty, residents and medical students in clinical research which I have done since I started at Loyola in 1990. I have presented our work co-authored with residents at the annual meeting of the association for research in vision and ophthalmology (ARVO) almost every year since 1990.
