MAYWOOD, IL – Loyola Medicine MacNeal Hospital has received its first Magnet® Recognition for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This recognition comes "with distinction," making MacNeal the sixth hospital in the country to be recognized with this award.

Magnet with Distinction™ recognizes hospitals based on quality patient care and nursing excellence. Fewer than ten percent of hospitals in the U.S. have earned Magnet status, and only a select few hospitals have earned the new "with Distinction" honor to recognize an "elite level" of performance, according to the ANCC. The Magnet with Distinction™ program was created as a special designation to "celebrate hospitals and health care organizations that exceed scoring thresholds required to earn Magnet designation." The 2024 recognition ensures Magnet designation through 2029.

"This prestigious honor is a testament to our amazing nurses and the dedication, skill and passion that they bring to MacNeal every day," said Jennifer Scheeringa, Chief Nursing Officer at MacNeal. "This journey began with a shared vision of creating the best place for nurses to practice, creating an environment where nurses are empowered, supported and inspired. This designation reflects our unwavering commitment to nursing excellence, patient care and professional growth. I am beyond thrilled, so incredibly proud of this team and grateful to be on this journey with them!"

MacNeal Hospital outpaced national standards in nine categories:

  • Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI)
  • Patient falls
  • Surgical errors and surgical burns
  • Patient experience
  • Patient education
  • Patient responsiveness
  • Patient safety
