Internal Medicine Residency

Welcome to the Loyola Medicine's Internal Medicine Residency!

Message from the Program Director

Michael Stokas, MD, MS, FACP, FAAP

I am thrilled to welcome you to the Internal Medicine Residency at Loyola University Medical Center. I currently serve as one of the Associate Program Directors (APDs) and will assume the role of Program Director on July 1, 2025. My journey at Loyola began as an undergraduate student at Loyola University Chicago, then at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, and continued on during my combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Loyola University Medical Center. I had the honor of being a Chief Resident and now have been part of the clinical teaching faculty for nearly a decade.

I am excited to take on the role of Program Director and lead our already exceptional program into the future. The strength of our program lies in the outstanding people at Loyola. Our trainees are intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated to the patients they serve. We care for a diverse patient population, many of whom are underserved and marginalized. Our residents are directly involved in the care of some of the most complex patients in the country, which ensures that our graduates are among the best-trained Internists, capable of handling any clinical situation. Our faculty is dedicated to ensuring that our trainees are clinically excellent, actively engaged in meaningful research, and mentored throughout their training.

Our residency has a strong leadership team; the combined experience of our Program Director and Associate Program Directors totals over 75 years!  Together with our Chair, Dr. Marilyn Glassberg, and Dr. Kevin Simpson, our Program Director for the past 29 years (who will be remaining on the team as an APD), our training program is well positioned to provide the rigorous training that will allow every one of our residents to excel and thrive. We are excited to have the opportunity to have you learn more about our program.

About our Residency

At Loyola Medicine we believe that great physicians don’t just care for patients, they care for the human spirit. This philosophy also guides our learning environment where our faculty and residents are called to create spaces for our learners that are safe, meaningful and foster a sense of community.

We accomplish these goals by exposing our residents to a diversity of patient experiences, learning sites and specialties, a robust series of didactics and multiple layers of mentorship to help them succeed.

Our Clinical Sites

Loyola Internal Medicine Residents rotate at Loyola University Medical Center and the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital which are both located in Maywood, IL, just west of the city of Chicago.

Loyola University Medical Center is a 547-bed quaternary medical facility with over 24,000 yearly admissions. Loyola is ranked nationally in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery and Ear, Nose & Throat (Otolaryngology). We are also recognized as high performing in Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Pulmonary & Lung Surgery by U.S. News & World Report's 2022-23 Best Hospitals list. Loyola has internationally recognized transplant programs including bone marrow, cardiac, liver, pulmonary and renal.

The Hines VA offers primary, extended and specialty care to Veteran patients in the Chicago area. It is the largest VA in the state of Illinois, where more than a million Veterans reside. The hospital treats more than 44,000 veterans from World War II through the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Our Core Values and Program Mission Statement:

This is each trainee’s one residency:

  • We reject the idea that whatever has been done will always be done, but rely on prior experiences to help prevent repeat errors
  • We acknowledge that merely replicating the curriculum/systems in place at other institutions is NOT fruitful and in some cases could be harmful
  • We celebrate the positive programs we have in place at our institution and the dedicated faculty and GME leadership who supports us
  • We seek to focus on optimizing resident educational experiences, not merely on staffing needs of the hospital
  • We value continuity of care and longitudinal training experiences
  • We value resident wellness, requests and professional goals
  • We seek to establish firm caps as a patient safety initiative and to improve morale
  • We value diverse clinical experiences and consult experiences
