About
Wissam N. Raad MD, FACS, FRCS is a minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgeon. He serves as the Chief of Thoracic Foregut Surgery for the Loyola University Health System. In addition to his role at Loyola, Dr. Raad is the designated Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Director of the Lung and Thoracic Malignancies program, and the Robotic Thoracic Surgery program at AMITA Health SJMC. Prior to joining Loyola Medicine, Dr. Raad served on Faculty as an Assistant Professor at the Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City along with nationally renowned experts in thoracic surgery and thoracic surgical oncology. He brings with him a wealth of experience in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted complex lung resections, innovative treatments for benign esophageal disease, as well as the state-of-the-art management of lung nodules, lung cancer, and other thoracic malignancies. His area of interest and specialty is Minimally-Invasive Thoracic Surgery. He specializes in the management of benign and malignant thoracic surgical diseases and in the use of the Robotic-assisted platform, Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), single incision(Uniportal-VATS), and interventional endoscopy to provide high quality complex thoracic surgery with more precision and smaller incisions. Dr. Raad is a proponent of the multidisciplinary team approach in the practice of thoracic surgery involving pulmonary medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and gastroenterology. More importantly, Dr. Raad is passionate about providing care to patients and their families with empathy, dignity, and respect while honoring autonomy when discussing medical treatments and decisions. He is actively involved in several academic societies and organizations including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Dr. Raad's research background includes translational research, quality outcomes research, and resident and medical student education. His current research focus and interest includes surgical costs and quality outcomes, development of clinical trials, and translation of bench observation to potential clinical applications. He co-authored numerous publications and he has been frequently invited to present his research findings at national and international meetings.
