Loyola Medicine's Interventional Radiology program specializes in minimally invasive, targeted treatments utilizing X-ray, MRI, ultrasound and other imaging modalities. Diseases are treated using the least invasive methods possible.
For instance, interventional oncology is a growing specialty within interventional radiology where treatments can be delivered directly to a tumor with minimal effect on adjacent tissue.
Many conditions that once required surgery can now be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. These minimally invasive treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time when compared to open surgery.
Program Mission
The mission of Loyola's Interventional Radiology program is to provide the highest quality, evidence based, minimally invasive care possible in a compassionate patient centered setting while providing educational and research opportunities for fellows part of Loyola Medicine's Interventional Radiology Fellowship program and medical students.
From the Director
Welcome to the Loyola University Chicago Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency Program. Our mission is to provide exceptional training in both Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology while developing compassionate, skilled, and well-rounded interventional radiologists with the knowledge, judgment, and technical expertise to provide outstanding patient care.
Our comprehensive training prepares graduates for diverse careers in Interventional Radiology—including academic medicine, community practice, and research—and equips them to become leaders and innovators in this exciting and rapidly evolving specialty. We emphasize clinical excellence, scholarship, innovation, and lifelong learning while supporting each individual in pursuing their unique interests and career goals.
We believe outstanding interventional radiologists begin with a strong foundation in diagnostic imaging, complemented by rigorous procedural and clinical training. Following an eligible clinical internship in surgery, internal medicine, or a transitional-year program, residents enter our five-year integrated curriculum, which provides comprehensive diagnostic radiology education alongside early and longitudinal exposure to Interventional Radiology. Through progressive responsibility, close mentorship, and dedicated faculty, residents develop the clinical judgment, technical expertise, and patient-centered skills needed to care for patients throughout the continuum of treatment—from consultation and diagnosis through intervention and follow-up. Residents completing the program are eligible for board certification in both Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology.
We are proud to train in Chicago, a vibrant city known for its culture, architecture, arts, sports, food, and lakefront. Most of all, we are proud of the people who make Loyola such a special place to train. We invite you to explore our program, meet our faculty and residents, and discover what makes Loyola home. We look forward to getting to know you and welcoming you to the Loyola family.
