What is Bariatric Surgery and Medical Weight Loss?

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that encompasses the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity. Bariatrics includes dietary changes, exercise and behavioral therapy approaches to weight loss, as well as the use of weight loss drugs and surgery.

Medical weight loss at Loyola includes a physician-directed weight loss program based on scientific principles that target the root cause of your weight gain and excess weight. We work with you to achieve and sustain a long-term healthy weight.

Bariatric surgery includes a variety of surgical procedures performed on people who are obese. With bariatric surgery, weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach, removing a portion of the stomach or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch. The U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends bariatric surgery for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40, or for people with a BMI of 35 or higher coupled with weight-related medical conditions.
