Dean Emeritus of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine John R. Tobin passes away at age 91
MAYWOOD, Ill. - John R. Tobin, MD, retired dean of Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, died at home Tuesday, July 29. He was 91.
Tobin was "an outstanding educator and role model for generations of physicians," said Dr. Leonard L. Vertuno, professor, department of medicine at Stritch.
"He attracted excellence from all over the country," Vertuno said. "He established Loyola's department of medicine that excelled in patient care, teaching and research. He's the man who built Loyola."
Tobin was born to John R. Tobin Sr., MD, and Theresa Tobin in Elgin, Ill., on Dec. 18, 1916. In 1938, he graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame. He received his medical degree in 1942 from the University of Chicago.
Tobin did his internship at Rush-Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago before serving two years (1943-45) in the U.S. Army. He was a battalion surgeon with the 85th Infantry Division. Tobin was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor during the Italian Campaign.
Tobin served for many years on the medical education staff at Cook County Hospital in Chicago before joining Loyola as chairman of the department of medicine in 1969, the year the hospital opened. He served in that position until 1982.
From 1982 to 1987, Tobin was dean of Stritch School of Medicine and from 1985 to 1987 was associate provost for Loyola University Medical Center. Tobin retired from administrative duties in 1987 and became professor emeritus and dean emeritus.
Tobin was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Margaret "Peggy", (nee Callanan). He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Mary Kay Tobin, and her husband, Dr. Peter B. Thompson; his grandchildren, Ben and Katie Thompson; and sister, Alice Tobin Branagan.
A funeral Mass for Tobin will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 1 at Visitation Church, 719 S. York St., Elmhurst, Ill. A Memorial Service at Loyola University Medical Center will be held on date to be announced.
