Loyola dietitian available to comment on correlation of certain foods and weight gain
Potato chips were found to cause the most weight gain when compared with other foods, according to a study in the latest New England Journal of Medicine. This study looked at fruits, vegetables, whole grains, refined grains, potatoes, potato chips, whole-fat dairy products, low-fat dairy products, sugar-sweetened beverages, sweets and desserts, processed meats, unprocessed red meats, fried foods and trans fat. It also evaluated the impact of other lifestyle habits such as physical activity, television watching, alcohol use, sleep duration and cigarette smoking on long-term weight gain in non-obese adults. The study looked at the independent relationships between changes in lifestyle behaviors and weight gain in four-year periods over 20 years. The average weight gain across the study groups was 3.35 pounds during a four-year period. This corresponds to a weight gain of 16.8 pounds over a period of 20 years.
