Dr. Steven A. De Jong will lead a department with a long history of innovation, excellence
MAYWOOD, Ill. -- Dr. Steven A. De Jong, 50, has been named interim chairman of the department of surgery at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
"Dr. De Jong is an accomplished surgeon whose longtime commitment to Loyola and the school of medicine makes him the ideal person to become our new chief of surgery," said Dr. Paul K. Whelton, president and CEO of Loyola University Health System (LUHS). "I'm confident that Dr. De Jong's appointment will allow us to continue to deliver on Loyola's mission to provide the highest quality care to patients."
De Jong replaces Dr. Richard Gamelli, founder of Loyola's Burn Institute, and who stepped down after 19 years to assume the role of dean of Stritch School of Medicine.
A resident of Willowbrook, De Jong began his affiliation with Loyola as a medical student in 1980 and as a research assistant in 1982. In 1984, he received his medical degree from the Stritch School of Medicine, where he completed his surgical residency training from 1985 to 1989. In 1990, he completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at Stritch.
In 1994, he was appointed chief of endocrine surgery at Loyola, where he was also named associate professor of clinical surgery in 1995. In 2002, he was appointed chief of the division of general surgery at Loyola, professor of surgery at Stritch, and vice chair of clinical affairs in the department of surgery.
De Jong is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member and frequent officer of a large number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Central Surgical Association, Western Surgical Association, Midwest Surgical Association and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
Currently, De Jong is the surgeon medical director of perioperative services of LUHS and an active clinician, educator and administrator with a genuine commitment to research. He actively participates on many hospital and medical school committees and has made a number of presentations, published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored four books.
