Gynecologic oncologist to lead department
MAYWOOD, Ill. -- Loyola University Health System (LUHS) has named Ronald K. Potkul, MD, as chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology effective July 1, 2011. Dr. Potkul assumes this role after serving as the departmentâs interim chair since April 2010. He also serves as director of Clinical Gynecology Services and Gynecologic Oncology at LUHS and as a professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM). âDr. Potkul has demonstrated his dedication and vision for the department during his tenure at Loyola,â said Richard L. Gamelli, MD, FACS, senior vice president and provost of Health Sciences, SSOM. âAs chair, he will lead efforts to enhance the obstetrics and gynecology academic programs in research and education as well as clinical services at Loyola University Medical Center and at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital.â Dr. Potkul joined LUHS in 1992 and has held a variety of roles within the department. As the director of Gynecologic Oncology, he established a renowned clinical practice. Dr. Potkulâs academic activities have included research and education with participation in federally funded cancer studies. He also has served as the fellowship director and residency program director.
Dr. Potkul has led research efforts that have resulted in several peer-reviewed grants and publications. He has received numerous awards including the ACOG National Faculty Award and the Outstanding Faculty Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Potkul has been named to Chicago Magazineâs âTop Doctorsâ list every year since 1997. He also is an active member of several professional societies. Dr. Potkul received his bachelorâs degree from Princeton University and graduated from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he did his residency. Dr. Potkul also completed a gynecologic oncology fellowship with Georgetown University Medical Center.
