Endocrinologist tells you what to look for with common thyroid problems

Loyola endocrinologist Norma Lopez, MD, talks about how important the thyroid is in regulating your metabolism.

She said that an underactive thyroid is a common problem. Symptoms of hypothyroidism (when your thyroid doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone) are:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Feeling easily chilled

The symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) include:

  • Anxiety
  • Palpitations
  • Hair loss
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Often feeling too warm
  • Weight loss
  • Difficulty concentrating

Dr. Lopez said that probably half of the population has thyroid nodules. Of those, about 5 percent may have thyroid cancer. Surgery is the preferred treatment for thyroid cancer. Be sure to tell your doctor if someone in your family has had thyroid problems because these conditions are often inherited.
