Caesarean-Section Rates on the Rise

Loyola Ob/Gyne Experts Available to Comment on National Trend

WHAT: Between 2002 and 2009, the number of Caesarean-section deliveries rose significantly from 27 to 34 percent, according to a report titled HealthGrades 2011 Obstetrics & Gynecology in American Hospitals. Loyola University Health System ob/gyne experts attribute the rise in this invasive procedure to the "Caesareans on demand" trend, which is an accepted practice by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. A study published in 2009 in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that the increase in C-sections in the United States seems to contribute to the rise in serious complications during childbirth. Though Loyola physicians believe that C-sections are a necessary procedure for certain people, they stress the importance of counseling women on the risks associated with both C-sections and vaginal deliveries.
