MAYWOOD -- Retired basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabber has announced he has chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
Ten or 15 years ago, this would have been a very grim diagnosis. But today, CML "is a very treatable disease," said Dr. Scott Smith, a leukemia specialist at Loyola University Health System. "Three drugs on the market, including Gleevec, are very good at getting people into remission and keeping them in remission for a very long time."
Smith is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
