The 3-D Imaging Lab reconstructs computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images into three-dimensional models that can quickly show the relationship between blood vessels, bones and muscles. This imaging tool is valuable in both trauma and non-trauma cases, by providing more information towards the diagnosis of everything from a displaced fracture to aortic and cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Here are a few examples of the types of images the 3-D Imaging Lab uses:
- Multiplanar and 3-D images are used to display normal and abnormal vessels in the vascular system. 3-D has an important role in assessing potential kidney donors and patients with vascular disease. It is also used before and after stent placement in the treatment of aneurysms as well as in the display of coronary arteries during cardiac CT.
- 3-D CT is useful in understanding complex injuries and fractures especially for pre-surgical reduction, particularly hip, knee and ankle regions. CT with 3-D can also evaluate fracture healing/fixation integrity of devices as well as bone tumors.
- In the brain, 3-D tools can pinpoint aneurysms and provide detailed mapping information for surgical planning. 3-D images can confirm the presence of an aneurysm, as well as assist in the management of those aneurysms using neurosurgical or endovascular techniques.
- The 3-D Imaging Lab also offers 3-D dental post processing service for dentists and oral surgeons. Using a precise, planning software dentists can accurately plan the placement of dental implants.
- 3-D images of the heart can assess heart function and identify any coronary artery disease. Images clearly show blockages that may lead to a heart attack, and will show both calcified and soft cholesterol plaques in the arteries. This helps determine the presence and severity of any blood flow blockage. 3-D imaging also is useful in diagnosing some congenital heart disorders.
