Loyola ENT Resident Wins Research Competition at Chicago Meeting
MAYWOOD, Ill. -- Two Loyola resident physicians finished in first and third place April 12 in the Chicago Laryngological and Otological Society's annual academic resident competition.
Dr. Amy Pittman won first place with her research presentation on anabolic steroids and recurrent nerve paralysis. Dr. Carl Moeller placed third with a clinical study on sinus screening for transplant patients.
A third Loyola resident, Dr. James Jaber, gave a basic science presentation on tumor-inhibition factors.
"The superb research presented by Drs. Pittman, Moeller and Jaber is a demonstration of the great residency training program we have at Loyola," said Dr. James Stankiewicz, chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. "The ENT [ear-nose-throat] resident world knows Loyola is a force to be reckoned with."
Last year, two Loyola residents won "Rhinology Bowl," a Jeopardy-like competition held during the world's largest meeting of rhinologists, who treat nasal and sinus disorders.
Also at the Chicago Laryngological and Otological Society meeting, Dr. Sam Marzo was elected president-elect for 2011-2012. Marzo is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Stritch School of Medicine.
