MAYWOOD, Ill. – The emergency department nurses at Loyola University Health System (LUHS) have much to celebrate. Adrienne Lynch, BSN, RN, TNS, CEN, Dennis Monteverde, BSN, RN, PHRN, TNS, CEN, and Bill Wise, BSN, RN, PHRN, TNS, CEN, passed the trauma nurse specialist (TNS) exam. This course is a standardized program on the care of trauma patients across the continuum. Debra Callender, RN, TNS, CEN, ENPC, Sarah Calvert, BSN, RN, TNS, CEN, Kristi Dombrow, BSN, RN, CEN, TNS, Kathleen Dreyer, BSN, RN, CEN, TNCC, Linda Dybowski, BSN, RN, CEN, TNS, Jennifer Gibbons, BSN, RN, CEN, TNCC, Katrina Hejnowski, BSN, RN, TNS, CEN, Adrienne Lynch, BSN, RN, TNS, CEN, Dennis Monteverde, BSN, RN, PHRN, TNS, CEN, Linda Neessen, BSN, RN, TNS, ECRN, EMT-P, CEN, and Molly Teas, BSN, RN, CEN, TNCC, became certified emergency nurses (CEN). Each of these nurses works in the Department of Emergency Medical Services at LUHS. Carol Schleffendorf, MS, RN, CNE, NE-BC, became a board certified nursing executive (NE-BC). Schleffendorf is the administrative director for the Department of Emergency Medical Services at LUHS.

Loyola Nurse Earns Radiology Certification
Janelle Ramsborg, BSN, MBA, RN, CRN, became a certified radiology nurse (CRN) and president for the Association of Radiologic and Imaging Nurses (ARIN). Ramsborg is the manger for radiology nursing at Loyola University Hospital (LUH).

Loyola Nurses Earn Advanced Degrees and Cardiovascular Certifications
Sally Birger Botkin, MSN, RN, and Charis Habercoss, MSN, RN, earned their master’s of science in nursing degrees from Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. Habercoss and Birger Botkin also became clinical nurse specialists (CNS) in cardiovascular disease. Habercoss works in the Department of Cardiology Transplant at LUH while Birger Botkin works in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Carol Lynch, MSN, RN, also earned her master’s of science in nursing degree from Elmhurst College. Lynch works in the Center for Heart and Vascular Medicine at LUH.

Loyola Nurse Becomes a Clinical Nurse Leader
Patricia Boylan, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNL, became a clinical nurse leader (CNL) in May 2009. This role is part of LUHS’ new model of care, which puts the patient first. Boylan works in the cardiovascular and thoracic intensive care unit at LUH.

Loyola Nurses Earn MSN Degrees
Christina Dabros, RN, and Paula Sweeney, RN, earned their master’s of science in nursing from Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. Dabros works at the Loyola Center for Health at Oakbrook Terrace and Sweeney works in the Department of Surgical Services at LUH. Sweeney’s daughter also is a member of the Loyola University Chicago class of 2009. She received her bachelors of science in liberal arts.

Loyola Nurses Publish Quality Improvement Article
LUHS nurses Donna Murphy, APN, CDE, and Terese Bertucci, NP, CDE, published an article in the April 2009 issue of the Journal of Quality Improvement titled, “Reducing Hyperglycemia Hospitalwide: The Basal-Bolus Concept.” The article described a health system-wide experience with insulin protocols over five years.

Loyola ED Nurse to Publish Article on EMS Recruitment and Retention
Lauri Beechler, MSN, RN, CEN, NREMT-B, will be the lead author on the upcoming article titled, “Sowing the Seeds - Part 2.” It will be published in the November/December issue of EMS Magazine. This is a follow up article that evaluates the recruitment and retention of EMS professionals. Beechler currently works as a nurse and paramedic educator in the Department of Emergency Medical Services at LUHS.

Loyola Nurse Presents Before American Organization of Nurse Executives
Theresa Pavone, MSN, RN, was invited to present at the annual meeting for the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) in San Antonio, Tex. Her talk was titled, “Focus Time – Nurses Take Time to Treat Their Team.” Pavone works in the cardiac telemetry unit at LUHS.
