MAYWOOD, Ill. - In preparation for the needs of its new $120 million hospital, Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Ill., has begun adding nurse managers who have vast experience in administration and patient care.
Carol Schleffendorf, MS, RN, is the new administrative director who oversees trauma, burn, emergency medical services at Loyola. Schleffendorf is an accomplished and experienced leader. She holds a master's of science degree in management from National Louis University in Evanston, Ill., and has held previous positions of responsibility at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Westlake Community Hospital in Melrose Park, and most recently at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago. Areas that will report directly to Schleffendorf include the intensive care unit, burn clinic, pre-hospital emergency medical services and the emergency department.
Caroline Kelly, BSN, MSC, RN, is the new nurse manager for the medical intensive care unit at Loyola. She has more than 22 years in nursing. She has extensive experience in training and development, client relations and health care management. Prior to coming to Loyola, Kelly served as the nurse manager of the oncology unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She also worked at Catholic Health Partners and Columbus Hospital, both in Chicago, and the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Kelly holds a master's of science degree in communications from Northwestern University in Evanston, and a bachelor's of science degree in nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago.
Thomas F. Piotrowski, RN, BSN, CNRN, CNA, is the new nurse manager of the inpatient neurosciences unit at Loyola. Prior to coming to Loyola, Piotrowski served as nurse manager of the neurosciences department at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He holds bachelor's of science degrees in nursing and psychology from Loyola University Chicago, in Chicago; where he is currently pursuing a master's of science degree in health systems management. Piotrowski is a member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nursing and over the last several years has been involved in a variety of nursing leadership activities including two grant-funded projects. In addition, he holds two certifications: Certified Neurological Registered Nurse (CNRN) and Certified Nursing Administrator (CNA).
Bobbi Hartman, BS, RN, is the new manager of the cardiac care unit and heart transplant unit at Loyola. She brings to Loyola more than 17 years experience in cardiovascular nursing, including telemetry and critical care. One of her major accomplishments was the development of the e-ICU operation model for the Advocate System. Bobbi joins Loyola from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where she held the position of clinical manager on the Feinberg 13W medicine unit. She is pursuing a joint master's degree in health care management and hospital clinical informatics at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
In April, Loyola will unveil its hospital that will include 176,000 square feet of new space, 12 additional operating rooms, a two-story hospital entrance, separate elevators and corridors for patients and visitors and other amenities that will enhance the healing process for patients. The nursing positions that need to be filled are in the surgical and cardiology areas. Positions are also open for patient care technicians and service coordinators.
Loyola nurse achieves oncology certification
Mary Foley, RN, OCN, has passed her oncology certified nurse exam. Foley is a staff nurse in the oncology department at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Ill.

American Nephrology Nurses' Association
Mary Kay Larson, BS, MSN, CNN, APRN-BC, is the new chapter coordinator-elect for the North Central Chapter of the American Nephrology Nurses' Association. The two-year appointment places her in a key position with that organization on a regional and national level. Larson is a nurse practitioner in the department of surgery, division of surgical oncology, Loyola University Hospital, Maywood, Ill.

as its 'Reviewer of the Year'
Linda Juretschke, PhD, RNC, ADN, NNP, CCNS, has been recognized as the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, & Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN) Reviewer of the Year. The honor is given yearly to a member of the JOGNN Editorial Review Panel as recognition for outstanding contribution to the journal as well as to this specialty area of nursing. Juretschke works in the neonatal intensive care unit at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Ill.
Loyola nurse presents paper at Chicago seminar
Pam S. Clementi, Ph.D., RN, presented "Patient Expectations During Health Care Encounters: A Grounded Theory Study" at the Qualitative Research: Another Voice in the Evidence-Based Practice Debate program held recently at Saint Xavier University School of Nursing in Chicago. She also presented the same paper at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill. Clementi is the manager of nursing education at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Ill.
Loyola nurse publishes paper on measuring pain in babies
Pat Hummel, MA, APN, published "Clinical Reliability and Validity of the N-PASS: Neonatal Pain, Agitation, and Sedation Scale with prolonged pain" in the January 2008 issue of the Journal of Perinatology. The N-PASS was developed in the neonatal intensive care unit of Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Ill. It is now the most widely used neonatal pain/sedation assessment tool in the United States and is used around the world. Hummel works in the neonatal intensive care unit at Loyola.

Teresita Bernardo, RN, will present "Peripheral Nerve Hyperexcitability Syndrome Associated with Voltage-Gated Potassium Channel Antibody, Managed with Therapeutic Plasma Exchange and Steroids" at the annual meeting of American Society for Apheresis in April in Galveston, Texas. Judy McHugh, RN, BSN, and Cecilia Petrowsky, RN, BSN, CCRC, have received their master's of science degrees in health systems management with outcomes performance certificates from Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing in Chicago. McHugh is the nursing performance improvement coordinator at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Ill. Petrowsky is the manager of the cancer clinical trials office at the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
