Panel of speakers to address strategies to curb inequalities in patient care
MAYWOOD, Ill. - The 21st Annual Ruth K. Palmer Research Symposium will address clinical translational science and health disparities in response to the growing divide in health care worldwide. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at The Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook, Ill.
Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International and Nursing Services, Loyola University Health System, will co-sponsor the symposium. The goal of the program will be to define health disparities research from a multidisciplinary perspective. The event also will explore opportunities to further develop multidisciplinary research in this area.
"Health care disparities have become even more apparent during these trying economic times," said Mary Klotz Walker, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean and professor, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. "This symposium will provide a platform to share information about inequalities in health care and offer strategies to curb these issues for underserved patient populations."
Keynote speaker Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and the Nola J. Pender Collegiate Chair, University of Michigan, will be joined by a respected panel of speakers. The presenters will provide examples on how health disparities research has been used to bring about changes in patient care, nursing administration and health care resource allocation.
The symposium is designed for nurses, nurse practitioners, health care professionals and students who want to learn more about applying knowledge from bench to bedside. Nurse researchers, educators, practitioners, administrators and students also will present research posters throughout the day.
Loyola University Health System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurse's Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity will offer seven contact hours for nursing. This event was established from the Ruth K. Palmer Memorial Endowment: a gift from dean emeritus Gladys Kiniery in memory of her beloved sister.
"The late Gladys Kiniery and her sister Ruth K. Palmer have been instrumental in supporting research and knowledge-sharing," said Walker. "We look forward to carrying on their legacy through the annual symposium and its significant contributions to health care."
