Support and Patient Education

Patient Education

At Loyola University Health System, we understand what a mother is going through and are here to support her as she plans for the new baby's arrival. We offer classes for all members of the family to help prepare for the birth of and home life with a new baby.

We find that the best form of support is education on the "whys" and "hows" of pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care. The more the new mother knows about the changes taking place in her body, the more positive her childbirth will be, and the more she knows about her baby's growth and care, the easier the adjustment to parenting will be. Our carefully designed childbirth and childcare classes will give the expectant mother the knowledge, skills and confidence she needs during this special time.

We welcome and encourage full participation of partners. If an expectant mother has other children, we offer a special class for them, too, to help them get ready for a new brother or sister's arrival.

Each of our classes is led by an experienced instructor and includes plenty of time for questions. Classes are held at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., and at Loyola's Gottlieb campus in Melrose Park, Ill.

To help you prepare for your delivery, we offer tours of the labor and delivery units, mother-baby units and nurseries at both Loyola campuses in Maywood and in Melrose Park.

Additional classes work with families who experience loss or other issues related to childbirth.
