Pharmacy Services for Cancer

The pharmacy staff provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care services for patients visiting the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center.  Located on the Cancer Center's first floor and adjacent to the Day Hospital, the main pharmacy is staffed by specialize oncology pharmacists and technicians.

Oncology pharmacists work closely with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safe and effective delivery of life-saving chemotherapy and supportive care therapies.  The pharmacy staff also play an active role in the education of patients and healthcare staff on the appropriate use of medication for the treatment of cancer.

All orders for chemotherapy are carefully reviewed and verified.  Doses of chemotherapy are prepared by expert pharmacists and technicians trained in the handling of these types of medications.  Before chemotherapy is administered to a patient it will pass through at least three separate checkpoints for correctness and accuracy.

Other pharmaceutical care services offered to patients and staff includes drug interaction screening, drug use monitoring, and collaboration with medical and nursing staff in clinical research programs.

Oncology pharmaceutical services are also provided to hospitalized patients and outpatients at off-campus cancer facilities including Marjorie Weinberg Cancer Center in Melrose Park and oncology clinics in Homer Glen and Wheaton.
