Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Loyola University Health System offers advanced minimally invasive surgical approaches for women who require intervention for a gynecologic condition.

Our highly trained experts use innovative surgical tools to perform challenging surgeries through small incisions to treat such conditions as uterine fibroid tumors, endometriosis and ovarian cysts. Minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries use slender cameras and instruments that are inserted into the abdomen (laparoscopy) or through the cervix (hysteroscopy). Our surgeons also provide expertise with the Da Vinci® robotic system, which enhances their ability to perform advanced surgeries such as myomectomies with small incisions.  Another option that our specialists offer is to perform the surgery without any abdominal incisions.

Our goal is to work with each woman individually to explore nonsurgical options first. However, when the situation calls for surgical intervention, our patients can benefit from a minimally invasive procedure. These benefits include:

  • Less post-operative pain
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery time
  • Smaller incisions
  • Quicker return to normal activities

Minimally invasive surgery for Women’s Services includes treatments for:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometrial polyps
  • Benign ovarian cysts and masses
  • Endometriosis

The robotic system works by translating your surgeon's hand movements on the robotic controls into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments that are inserted into the body. A tiny camera is inserted through a small incision so that the surgeon can see inside the body on a 3-D screen and control every move of the robotic arms from a computer console. The robot's arms are fully jointed, allowing them to turn and grasp with more agility and precision.
