Eligibility

Patients (18 years of age or older) with a pathologically proven diagnosis of salivary gland carcinoma and a surgical resection with curative intent within eight weeks prior to registration to the study may be eligible. The tumor’s pathologic stage must be T3-4, N1-3 or T1-2 N0 with a close margin or microscopically positive margin. Patient’s Zubrod performance status must be 0 - 1. No prior systemic chemotherapy or radiation therapy for the salivary gland cancer is allowed. Patients must have a CT of the neck and chest (or PET/CT) within 12 weeks of registration. Patients also must have a a history and physical, lab work, dental exam, audiogram and surgical evaluation within the timelines listed in the study.

Purpose

This study will compare the effects, good and/or bad, of radiation and chemotherapy with radiation alone on your salivary gland cancer to find out which is better at reducing the chance that your cancer will come back.
