Heart Attack Rapid Response Team (HARRT)

What is it?

Loyola is the first hospital in Illinois, and one of few hospitals in the nation, to staff a Heart Attack Rapid Response Team (HARRT) — a team of board-certified, highly experienced interventional cardiologists, nurses and technicians, who are on staff 24-hours a day, seven days a week. This team allows Loyola to provide life-saving emergency treatment to heart attack patients immediately upon arrival at the hospital.

When it comes to a life-threatening heart attack, early treatment improves patient outcomes. Heart attack patients receive an emergency balloon angioplasty that re-opens a blocked artery and restores blood flow to the heart. This procedure does the most good if performed within 60 minutes of the patient's arrival to the hospital. Reducing the time from when someone experiences symptoms of a heart attack to receiving treatment is a coordinated effort that begins with paramedics who take the patient to the hospital.

A growing number of ambulances are well-equipped, so paramedics can perform 12-lead electrocardiogram, which allows them to confirm a heart attack while en route to the hospital. If a heart attack is confirmed, the patient is taken immediately to the cardiac catheterization laboratory for treatment. From the time the patient arrives to the hospital to the time of the balloon angioplasty is called the "door-to-balloon" time.

The Loyola difference

Loyola's expert interventional cardiologists each perform approximately 300 angioplasties per year — experience that translates into improved outcomes for Loyola patients. Our HARRT specialists achieve the national standard of 90-minute door-to-balloon time 100 percent of the time. More than 90 percent of these procedures are completed within 60 minutes.  Loyola has achieved a 15-minute door-to-balloon time, one of the fastest achieved anywhere  in the country.

National recognition

The American College of Cardiology honored Loyola with its Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2014. Loyola is one of only 256 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The award recognizes Loyola’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. It signifies that Loyola has reached an aggressively high standard in treating these patients under the guidelines and recommendations of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association.
