What is it?
Loyola University Health System offers both Phase I (inpatient) and Phase II (outpatient) cardiac rehabilitation for patients, which is a medically monitored exercise and education program for patients who have had a recent heart illness or procedure. This is especially recommended for patients who have had a heart attack, angina, heart failure, angioplasty, coronary bypass surgery or a heart transplant.
Cardiac rehabilitation focuses on risk factor modification to strengthen the body and decrease the risk for another cardiac event. Risk factors include elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol and being overweight. Enrolling in a cardiac rehabilitation program can help improve the quality of life for patients in the long term.
Phase I cardiac rehabilitation is offered on an inpatient basis and is completed during the recovery phase to ensure patients are safe to return to their normal routine. This is done by a team of trained nurses and rehabilitation technicians, who focus on ambulation and education in preparation for discharge from the hospital setting.
Phase II cardiac rehabilitation is offered on an outpatient basis at Loyola’s Burr Ridge facility. The first visit is with a trained nurse who will tailor an exercise program for each patient and establish goals. Over the course of 12 weeks (36 sessions), a team of nurses, rehabilitation technicians, dietitians and others work to improve the patient’s cardiac health and provide education related to lifestyle and risk factor modification in collaboration with the patient's primary-care physician or cardiologist. The classes are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Classes are arranged to fit the patient’s needs and last for an hour.
