New Loyola Pediatric Critical-Care Physician Loves 'Full Range' of Specialty

MAYWOOD, Ill. – Dr. David J. Ubogy has joined the staff of the Department of Pediatrics at Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill. He will also serve as an assistant professor in the department’s division of critical-care medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. Ubogy’s professional interests include bioethics and medical anthropology in addition to pediatric critical care. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both general pediatrics and pediatric critical-care medicine. “I chose pediatric critical care specifically because there isn’t one area of pediatrics that I enjoy more than the other,” Ubogy said. “For instance, pediatric cardiology focuses only on heart problems to the exclusion of other specialties. I enjoy the full range of what we can do in pediatric critical care.” A resident of Oak Park, Ubogy came to practice at Loyola on Jan. 1. Prior to that, he served as an assistant professor, division of pediatric critical-care medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. His experience also includes serving as an attending physician at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago and in the pediatric intensive-care unit at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, Mich. He also served as a staff pediatrician at the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti. In January 2010, days after a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti, he recruited two other physicians and together the trio traveled to Port-au-Prince to assist Haitian relief efforts. While in Haiti, he joined with U.S. Navy physicians to treat injured children aboard the hospital ship USNS Comfort. Ubogy received his medical degree in 1996 from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland where he served clerkships in ambulatory pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. While there he also concentrated on bioethics. In 2006, Ubogy earned a master’s degree in medical humanities with concentrations in bioethics and medical anthropology. In 1999, Ubogy completed a pediatric residency at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Ariz. In 2004, he completed a pediatric critical-care fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Mich. Ubogy has won a number of teaching awards and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and reviews. Ubogy cares for patients at the Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center at 2160 S. First Ave., Maywood.
