When faced with a skin cancer diagnosis, patients seek treatments that offer the best cure rates, such as the highly specialized, state-of-the-art technique called Mohs micrographic surgery.
“Our number one goal is to cure the cancer while preserving as much normal tissue as possible using the Mohs technique,” explained Sheetal Mehta, MD, assistant professor, medicine, dermatology division, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (LUC SSOM).
Dr. Mehta and her colleague, Steven Goulder, MD, assistant professor, medicine, dermatology division, LUC SSOM, and Chief of Dermatologic Surgery, meticulously remove tissue around and under the tumor, process the tissue onsite in their laboratory and then examine the tissue under a microscope. They repeat the process until no cancer cells remain. “This outpatient technique provides the highest cure rate, ranging from 97 to 99 percent. It also allows our patients to undergo cosmetic reconstruction the same day,” Dr. Mehta said.
Drs. Mehta and Goulder discuss individual cosmetic reconstruction options with each patient and collaborate with other Loyola surgical subspecialists, such as plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists or oculoplastic surgeons for optimal results.
“Twenty five percent of Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and organ transplant recipients are at a significantly higher risk,” Dr. Goulder said. Since early detection significantly increases survival rates, people age 40+ are encouraged to have annual skin cancer screenings.
