Intra-Abdominal Transplant Surgery Services

Loyola is nationally recognized for its specialty care and research in the field of organ transplantation. In the intra-abdominal transplantation program, a highly specialized medical and surgical team provides comprehensive care for transplantation of the liver, kidney or pancreas. The establishment of this program reflects major progress made in the last decade in the management of these often complicated conditions and in patient survival. Goals of this program are to provide optimal patient care and further the understanding of transplantation through education and research. Support groups also are available for patients and families.

Specialty Services

Kidney Transplantation

Loyola has more than 30 years of experience in restoring patients with end-stage kidney disease to well being and normal energy levels. More than 775 kidney transplantations have been performed since the program's inception in 1971. Our short- and long-term graft survival rates, as well as low rejection rates in adult and pediatric recipients, are among the best in the United States.

Liver Transplantation

Initiated in 1997, Loyola’s liver transplant program has completed 216 liver transplantations with an above average success rate of 93 percent. Current 90-day, one-year, and five-year patient survival rates are 94 percent, 90 percent and 78 percent respectively and match or exceed national averages as determined by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

Research

Studies continue in the preservation of organs, use of extracorporeal liver assist devices and immune suppression.
