Loyola’s Hepatology Program has earned a national reputation for excellent care. Our hepatologists, or liver disease experts, are leaders in their field and board certified in gastroenterology and hepatology, as well as transplant hepatology. Our group specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of acute and chronic liver disease.

Our specialists have developed effective, nationally recognized treatment plans for hard-to-treat and advanced cases of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatocellular carcinoma. Additionally, the team is skilled at treating all aspects of liver disease, including cholestatic liver diseases, metabolic liver disorders, autoimmune liver diseases, drug-induced liver injury and acute liver failure.

Transplant Specialists

When transplant appears to be the necessary medical treatment, you will be carefully evaluated in the Liver Transplant Clinic. Our hepatology team is an integral part of Loyola's liver transplant program, which was launched in 1997. This is a multidisciplinary team approach, which includes hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, interventional radiologists, transplant coordinators, psychologists, social workers, nutrition experts, pharmacists and financial counselors. Our multidisciplinary team will work with you through your transplant and in the years that follow.

Research That’s Shaping Tomorrow

Our hepatology team is always breaking new ground. Our program’s research interests include treatment options for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, emerging therapies for hepatitis C and B, alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. We work closely with our transplant surgeons to foster innovative research in immunosuppression and liver transplantation.

Caring for High-Risk Patients

Following our Jesuit tradition, Loyola is known for taking on challenging cases that other programs might turn away. Caring for patients who are facing the most complex diseases is also part of our mission as an academic medical center. We are proud of the excellent outcomes in the treatment of our high-risk patients.

Specialty Services

Our specialty services include upper endoscopy with band ligation for control of variceal bleeding, colonoscopy, liver biopsy, EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) and ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) - a therapy that combines injected dyes, X-rays and endoscopy.

Our interventional radiologists are skilled in treating advanced liver cancer using:

TACE (transarterial chemoembolization), in which the blood supply to a tumor is cut off by blocking, or embolizing, the blood vessels with specific compounds in addition to injecting high concentrations of chemotherapy directly into the vessels supplying the tumor;
RFA (radiofrequency ablation), in which an electrical current is used to heat and destroy tumor cells; and
TheraSphere™ treatments, in which tiny glass beads are used to deliver radiation to the blood supply that feeds tumor cells.
