Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology Services

Comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and treatment are offered for patients with all types of allergies, from hay fever to food, drug or insect allergies, or for complications of allergies, such as skin reactions (atopic dermatitis, hives or angioedema), sinusitis and life-threatening anaphylaxis. Patients with asthma or immunodeficiency diseases also are treated. The full range of allergy diagnostic procedures includes pulmonary function testing, skin testing and bronchial challenge. Desensitization therapy is offered.

Loyola’s rheumatologists treat patients with connective tissue disorders, including ankylosing spondylitis; polymyositis; psoriatic, reactive or rheumatoid arthritis; Raynaud’s phenomenon; Reiter’s syndrome; systemic lupus erythematosus; scleroderma and vasculitis. Also treated are patients with musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. When appropriate, the rheumatologists interact with other specialists so that patients have access to physical or occupational therapy, biofeedback training, pain management or surgery. Treatments include plasmapheresis (plasma exchange).

Asthma Program
Patients learn how to control their asthma so that they can live without restrictions.

Apheresis Unit
Evaluation and apheresis therapy are provided to patients with immunologic and malignant diseases.
