Loyola's hospital expansion represents a whole new vision of patient care that looks at the patient's experience and recovery through the eyes of the patient.
Designers and builders took into consideration the issues that matter most to patients and set out to create a state-of-the-art medical facility that provides the most comfortable, calming, positive patient-care experience possible.
In total, construction includes the development of 176,000 square feet of new space:
- In the Loyola University Hospital Tower, an 18-foot high soothing wall of water within the two-story open-air lobby evokes the healing power of nature
- Twelve new operating suites have been built for maximum efficiency and are designed to house the most sophisticated robotic surgical equipment available, enabling surgeons to operate with the highest level of precision and accuracy
- Sixty-four new, large nature-inspired private patient rooms provide the most comfortable surroundings possible for patients and family members, with flat screen televisions and wireless Internet access
- A special meditation garden and comfortable waiting rooms add to the natural surroundings that are conducive to patient recovery
Construction also includes 60,000 square feet of renovated existing hospital space. The Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine, created in 2004, provides an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to caring for inpatients and outpatients with vascular and heart disorders. The center will receive:
- A new reception area
- New areas for non-invasive cardiac and peripheral vascular diagnostics
- Four new cardiac catheterization laboratories
- Three new electrophysiology laboratories with room for one additional laboratory to accommodate growth
